Shoeburyness Officers Mess
Arson Attack
I am sad to report that the Officers Mess was destroyed by fire on
Tuesday evening the 4th August 09. It is believed that this was an arson
attack. The Mess has stood empty for several years now as Gladale
Homes have been unable to sell it on for re-development. A very sad end to
a part of Artillery History as this was the second most Senior Mess,
Woolwich being the No1 Officers Mess in The Royal Regiment.
Below are a few pictures of the blaze,
and I thank Paul Taylor for posting these photos on Flikr
and given me permission to publish them here.

The Royal Artillery leave
its Home at Woolwich
The Home of The Royal Artillery 1716 - 2007
Yes it's true The Royal Regiment has departed Woolwich Barracks for good.
The Barracks have been saved from closure and The Brigade of Guards have moved in.
The RA Band and some elements of the TA will remain at Woolwich.
Article from 'The Times'
The Royal Regiment of Artillery held a Parade and Sunset Ceremony at the
Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich on Saturday, May 26, 2007, to mark
It's departure from Woolwich, its Regimental home for the past 291 years.
The Regiment's new home will be The Artillery Centre at Larkhill,
near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
During the morning, events were held at the Regimental Museum, Firepower,
on the site of the Woolwich Arsenal. During the afternoon, as well as the
King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, detachments from all Gunner Regular and
Territorial Army Regiments took part in a Parade at which the Inspecting Officer
was Field Marshal The Lord Vincent of Coleshill, GBE, KCB, DSO.
The Parade included a march past of veterans led by the President of the
Royal Artillery Association, Major-General M.F.L. Shellard, CBE.
The Parade was followed by a Sunset Ceremony at which the salute was
taken by The Master Gunner St James Park, General Alex Harley, KBE, CB.
A message of loyal greetings was sent on behalf of the Regiment to the Queen,
Captain-General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. In her response,
Her Majesty sent warm good wishes to all members of the Regiment
for a memorable and successful event.
More than 200 years of History draws to a close as the
Royal Artillery finally leaves Woolwich.

Some Pictures from the Day

Press Release - Sept 2005
TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE FOR
36 REGIMENT RA AT SHOEBURY GARRISON
Former members of the 36 Heavy Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery are set to take a trip down memory
lane at their former Barracks at Shoebury Garrison just outside Southend-on-Sea.The Regiment's 21st Reunion
will take place on 24th September 2005 and the ex-soldiers will be remembering their past with a visit to
the Horseshoe Barracks where they were once stationed.
The 36 Regiment was based at Shoeburyness between 1956 until 1971 when the soldiers were
moved to the Napier Barracks in Dortmund, Germany.
The former military Garrison has been restored as part of a major regeneration project by leading housebuilder
Gladedale Homes - part of the Gladedale Group - to create a luxury development offering a mix of
traditional period properties and new build homes.
The former soldiers and Gladedale Homes are working together to build a history of what life was like when
the Garrison was in use and are appealing to local residents in a bid to obtain information, memories
and artefacts that might help.
Keith Holderness who served in the last unit to be posted at Shoebury Garrison is helping
Reunion Secretary Paul Barber to organise the meeting. He said: "Shoeburyness was a popular posting
for young gunners as it was close to the nightlife at Southend-on-Sea. I was there from 1968 to 1971 and have
extremely happy memories of my time at the Horseshoe Barracks.
"There will be a great sense of coming home at this year's Reunion and over 100 members will have the opportunity
to visit the restored Barracks. I would be grateful to anyone that can provide further insight into life at Shoebury Garrison."
Debbie Gallier, Sales Manager at Gladedale Homes, said: "At Gladedale Homes we are focused upon
preserving the Garrison's nostalgic charms. This reunion will not only be a chance for soldiers to meet old friends
but it will also show that their memories will live on at Shoebury Garrison.
"We are keen to hear from as many people to help fill us in on the history of our new development."
If anyone has any information on the history of the 36 Regiment Royal Artillery at Shoebury Garrison
please write to Gemma McGhee, the BIG partnership, 5 Park Circus Place, Glasgow, G3 6AH
Prices at Shoebury Garrison start from £289,995. For further information please contact 01702 290232
