Exercise Lionheart
September 1984
Did you have the pleasure in taking part in Lionheart, I did and have some happy memories of
being attached to 19 Field Regiment with their Abbots.
There has been much coverage in the press about Lionheart. This exercise will be bigger than the
'Crusader' show in 1980, and will involve the largest U.K. transportation of troops overseas
since the 1939-45 war. Something like 60% of the T.A. will be dug-in somewhere in West Germany
by mid-September, along with large numbers of Regular Reservists (4,500, I heard later), and of course,
elements of the BAOR itself.
The aim of the exercise - according to a V.S.O. in a recent TV interview - was to show
[a] the nation, [b] our allies, and [c] our potential enemies, that BAOR could he reinforced quickly
and effectively should the need arise. During the exercise there would he three distinct phases:
[a] the call-up, [b] the transportation to West Germany - 'Full-Flow', and [c], a major tactical
exercise - 'Spearpoint' - which would take place in the region south of Hanover, between the
river Weser and the Harz Mountains.
As a Reservist I duly reported to Strensall Camp, York to be kited out. Once this was done
we were bused to Newcastle to pick up our flight to West Germany. It was a brand new aircraft,
so it really didn't feel like we were going on exercise. When we arrived and were sorted out we
took a Troop Train to Paderborn to be allocated to our Units for the duration of the Exercise.
I was attached to 19 Regiment as was my old pal Alex (Jock) Taylor, so we spent the next
two weeks together not sure what the MOD made of Lionheart, but I do know it was hard
work at times and we even captured a Yank one night.
The return trip was a bit different, the Aircraft was a Hercules, absolutely freezing all the way home,
oh well you can't have everything!
