The very first tour of the UK by the then new missile Regiment it was called KAPE
(keeping the army in the public eye ) must have been 1960,
the party was made up of men from the 7th AGRA , 36 GW, 37 HAA, 16 LAA, 22 LAA
and did the major towns in the UK , expect Glasgow as that was seen as a bit dodgy ,
but Belfast was OK.( that was not the case) Lt Hamilton was the man in charge (36 of course).
This photo was taken at Oswestry on an Open Day for the all New Regular Army.
Peter is far left without the hat.

Gunner Cup 1975
|
|
Bit of an indulgence here. I have just received the Craftman's Cup on behalf of the REME Workshop team (1975). We defeated the mighty SEME Bordon team (Seven Army Players!) on penalties after 2-2 at extra-time. The match was played at Napier Barracks, on the stadium pitch, and what I remember is the great turn-out from the Gunner's to support us in this match.

I believe that this cup was the Divisional Cup. As you can see from the score on the board, we won!!! Prof Hill's smile is prominent in the photograph, and his skill was prominent in the game.

The Regimental Boxing team, coached by Paddy Cobb and myself.
The Army Junior Colours Boxing Badge worn so proudly by
"Jonno" Johnson - left front row - actually belong to Paddy Cobb.
We put in on Jonno's tracksuit to put the fear of "You know who" up his opponent. The cup is the runner's up cup in the BAOR Novice Team Championship. The boxer's performed superbly to get to the final,
particularly as the Regiment did not posses a boxing pedigree.

The victorious Sgts Mess football team. I believe the year was 1975-1976
and the final was the BAOR Sgts mess Cup. The final was played in
Mulheim, but I can't remember who against. Although, I do remember that in almost each round including the final, we were always the underdogs!
Some very recognisable faces there!

The Regimental football team. I think it was the end of the 1973-1974 season. John is between the CO and Jimmy Shovelin, who was the football officer. Bill Williams took individual photographs of each team member holding the cups and you may notice that Glynn Healey's photograph is already in your collection!

circa 1978, I recall it was a demo for some General, to see what a Blowpipe position looked like,
so it was out in the morning to dig it, and then back to fill it in (which we're doing here ) again,
Left to Right, where you can see the faces are:- Glenn Rising, Mark Nunnery,
Boggy O'Connor,Dave Phipps, Kershaw (now Capt) Scoins, and Stan Davy.

This one shows extraordinary bravery...by the photographer. Billy Burrows was going
near on flat out cross country and was braking hard as the photo was taken.
Les Lowes looking unfazed in the Oic seat though. I can only guess at the date around 78/79.

Exercise Lionheart
September 1984
Did you have the pleasure in taking part in Lionheart, I did and have some happy memories of
being attached to 19 Field Regiment with their Abbots.
There has been much coverage in the press about Lionheart. This exercise will be bigger than the
'Crusader' show in 1980, and will involve the largest U.K. transportation of troops overseas
since the 1939-45 war. Something like 60% of the T.A. will be dug-in somewhere in West Germany
by mid-September, along with large numbers of Regular Reservists (4,500, I heard later), and of course,
elements of the BAOR itself.
The aim of the exercise - according to a V.S.O. in a recent TV interview - was to show
[a] the nation, [b] our allies, and [c] our potential enemies, that BAOR could he reinforced quickly
and effectively should the need arise. During the exercise there would he three distinct phases:
[a] the call-up, [b] the transportation to West Germany - 'Full-Flow', and [c], a major tactical
exercise - 'Spearpoint' - which would take place in the region south of Hanover, between the
river Weser and the Harz Mountains.
As a Reservist I duly reported to Strensall Camp, York to be kited out. Once this was done
we were bused to Newcastle to pick up our flight to West Germany. It was a brand new aircraft,
so it really didn't feel like we were going on exercise. When we arrived and were sorted out we
took a Troop Train to Paderborn to be allocated to our Units for the duration of the Exercise.
I was attached to 19 Regiment as was my old pal Alex (Jock) Taylor, so we spent the next
two weeks together not sure what the MOD made of Lionheart, but I do know it was hard
work at times and we even captured a Yank one night.
The return trip was a bit different, the Aircraft was a Hercules, absolutely freezing all the way home,
oh well you can't have everything!
